Republican candidate Greg Gianforte attacks reporter during interview (Updated: he's been charged with assault)

“Gianforte grabbed Jacobs by the neck with both hands and slammed him into the ground behind him… Gianforte then began punching the man… at no point did… Jacobs show any form of physical aggression toward Gianforte”

that sounds like a serious psychotic break.

What? He didn’t yell "Stop resisting! Oh I am in fear for my life, oh! Stop resisting!"

It sounds like an emboldened fascist. It’s the new normal.

I can imagine Lee J Cobb playing the part.

Legitimate insanity:

TL;DR: So, given that there was audio of the proceeding, the sheriff, who contributed to Gianforte’s campaign, has concluded he ought to press charges against Gianforte for Misdemeanour: Assault; the extent of the reporter’s injuries do not qualify for Felony: Assault.

It actually gives me some small hope that, when Fox News employees actually witness a blatantly illegal act by a GOP candidate, they will report it accurately and their corporate employer won’t bury the story. It’s actually front and center on the Fox News website right now. I had believed they would cover for any GOP candidate or office holder no matter what.

Well, it worked for Trump…

Or rather one male acted like a peaceful journalist and the other acted like a violent thug, at least according to the eyewitnesses.

Now that is pretty damning. If this guy still has a political career after this, something is seriously wrong.

What, among the people who were going to vote for him anyway? The choir doesn’t hand out points.

Yes, as I said. Acting like males.

Confrontation and displays of dominance are fairly common among males, regardless of your place in society. Or your species.

Why so? The Guardian is unquestionably a left leaning outlet. Or do you mean to say its just bad form for this to be clearly said?

Strange times indeed!

Apparently that’s a pittance for him.

Still, it’s a conflict of interest.

How is this not victim blaming?

Yuh,
Good observation.
It wasn’t (even just accusing) that an individual behaved out-of-turn, it was smearing the group that the individual allegedly belonged to, thus framing the altercation in a tribal way.
Shitty.

(I will stand for or against anyone that uses interview tactics that are seen as unfair - coz both ‘sides’ have assholes, but attacking the side based on bad behaviour of an individual is weak politics)

You fecker.
By not providing a link, you made me actually type an URL to foxnews into my browser bar to verify that claim.

It isn’t victim blaming. It isn’t anybody blaming.

It’s a purely rational and unemotional observation about how males of most species can act on this planet:

  • Two males approach each other in some situation
  • One male gets escalated to the point of aggression for some reason
  • Confrontation occurs, and other male either engages, or doesn’t.

The fact that it’s a politician and journalist are uninteresting to me. They might as well be two gorillas, two guys in a bar, or two insects. It’s just male things doing male behavior.

If he loses the election, does that make everything okay?

“Following multiple interviews and an investigation by the Gallatin county sheriff’s office it was determined there was probable cause to issue a citation to Greg Gianforte for misdemeanor assault,” sheriff Brian Gootkin said in a statement. “The nature of the injuries did not meet the statutory elements of felony assault.

and

According to campaign finance filings, Gootkin donated $250 to Gianforte’s campaign in March. Gootkin’s later statement acknowledged the contribution but said it had “nothing to do with our investigation which is now complete”.

Sure.

Let me guess - the prosecutor is a donor too or his wifes brother or something …

In the undying words of Mr. Archer:
“Do you want a banana republic? That’s how you get a banana republic!”

IANAL and I’m only really familiar with French criminal law, but it seems to me that the distinction is legit and factual. Apparently the sheriff did his job honestly.

No, not everything, but a significant portion of it.
