Have you ever noticed how USA doesnt have a formal name?[/quote]
Uh, “America”?
Wrong. England, Great Britain, the United Kingdom, and the British Isles are four geographically specific and distinct entities.
Do you mean “my personal opinion” when you say history? Or maybe “my country’s history books”?.. the notion of a personal history outside of my own memory kinda implies you’re assuming that I would dismiss consensus reality in the same way I’m saying Trump is.
Anyway, in answer, and in an attempt to tie this back to my original question to you; whilst I certainly think (and you might be surprised to find this sentiment echoed throughout the bbs) Obama set a terrible tone in his handling of people blowing the whistle on illegal government activity, he never seemed to be living in a personally constructed fantasy world borne of his narcissistic indulgence.
Maybe Obama is a narcissist, probably many politicians are, but Trump is POTUS now and is squarely the topic of discussion. Comparisons to Obama might make sense if we were talking about fiscal policy or foreign policy or whatever, but I never once saw him proclaim outright falsehoods and especially not in a way which did not seem to be an act and which really did seem to indicate a troubling disconnection with reality on such a trivial matter.
We can talk policy all day long, but surely we can agree that the apparent injection of such immediate, personal fantasy into political conversation is not good for anyone?
We’re talking about his perceptions, and the apparently non-satirical, wildly inaccurate nature of them.
But the rest of America has nothing to do with the USA. I vote for “Usa”, as in Usain.
The mind is a wonderful thing. I was triggered by this post to recall an incredible song by the UK band Human League in 1978. It was called “Circus of Death”. How did they know? And if only Jack Lord was still with us.
Circus of Death
Nine o’clock flight from Hawaii
The trident is just touching down
We’re waiting here on the tarmac
McGarrett is wearing a frown
He’s here to help with a problem
A blood-spattered curse on our land
Please cast your eye over this map, sir
This business is quite out of hand
The circus of death is approaching
It’s pathway is painted in red
Before it the frightened and helpless
Behind it a trail of the dead
The narcotic that forges their union
Is a substance known only to one
To the clown it is known as dominion
It’s a secret that he’ll give to none
The drug which gives the clown power
Means the circus can never be stopped
And his dream can go on unhindered
’Til the last human being has dropped
Spare me and my family
I’ve done you no wrong
Go away, please let us be
I’ve known you for too long
Bring on the ten million grandpas! I’ll fight them all!
Technically, you’re “Of America,” the two continents where 680 million other people who aren’t in the United States live but should still be considered American too.
Technically, sure … although technically I said ‘America’, not ‘The Americas’. When someone answers the question with “I’m from America”, I bet you could accurately identify where their passport was issued.
It would be like if someone said “I’m from Asia” and someone assumes they must be from China. Statistically, you’re probably right, but you could be very wrong.
Obama did the same in 2009. Well. not quite exactly the same. His was a lot more conciliatory since he literally named it, “National Day of Renewal and Reconciliation.”
Gah! A little warning next time, okay?
Not really. The United States of America is the only country with “America” in its name. Pretty much nobody says "I’m from “America” meaning the continent, because there are two continents named that, so if you are referring to a continent you’ll add “North” or “South” to it. If someone says they are from “America” they mean the United States.
Yep - but not IF they investigate, but rather WHEN they choose to do the purge.
Remember Bush Jnr’s election, all the mis-directed black democrat districts that were leafletted telling people to make sure they vote? The kicker - the date printed was the day AFTER the election.
It’s that easy.
Trump is a caricature of the USA. It’s like someone made a personification of the USA and over-exaggerated the most annoying aspects to make fun of it. I can’t stop laughing but then I remember that millions of USians think he’s a perfect fit for the job of kin… president.
Wtf? I know that facts don’t matter any more but the definitions for Democracy and Republic are easy to look up. You should do this. Democracy and republic are not mutually exclusive.
It’s interesting that compulsory voting does seem to be one of the simplest and most effective ways of thwarting extremism, simply because you can’t just rely on motivating your voter base (in whatever way you find most effective.) I’m not suggesting it’s easy to implement retrospectively, though, especially in somewhere as large as the US, which is the core problem.
