Trump just fired FBI director James Comey

Let’s not forget the Twenty-Fifth Amendment Solution. (My new favorite band.)

Only takes half the cabinet to get that ball rolling.

I’m going to get a concussion from all this banging my head on the desk.

They could scarcely do more, if they were trying to look guilty as sin.

Meaning, I assume, that hundreds of Republicans will be swayed? IMO, Trump’s camp included precious few non-partisan types.

Unfortunately it has to be confirmed by a 2/3 vote by both houses of congress in addition to his own staff, so functionally it’s actually harder than impeachment.

Pence is the absolute worst that severe, evangelical conservatism has to offer. Unlike Trump, he could actually be focused, effective, and build a consensus in Congress, to culturally and socio-economically drive the US into the direction of the 1890’s. Having said that, I’d be forever thankful for having him in office over Trump.

Trump could actually get us in a nuclear war with North Korea or Iran. Pence will not.

Survival first.

There’s an image that comes to mind when this sort of reasoning comes up: a medieval village tying a virgin to a stake, in order to appease the dragon.

A lot more than one woman on the stake in this case, though. Not only women, either. Gays. Muslims. Atheists. The entire planet, once you consider the impact of fundamentalism on science and climate.

Pence isn’t just an extreme theocrat. He’s an extreme theocrat who, after allying himself with an obvious fascist, got a close-up demonstration of just how easy it is to stage a fascist takeover of the US government.

If the GOP turns on Trump, they’ll be doing it for their own benefit, not the good of the country. Replacing Trump with Pence just means that you’re trading a clumsy autocrat for a polished one.

The extremism of the US right is a world-threatening issue, and the problem extends far beyond Trump. He’s just the tip of the pustule.

GOP delenda est

You are ignoring the timeline. In the best case, Trump won’t be removed for months, perhaps a year. That would give Pence only a few months in office before the 2018 Midterms. If Trump is removed from office, then there will be a massive housecleaning in 2018, and the Dems will almost certainly take back the senate, and quite possibly the house ( I’d like to be more certain, but non-conservatives have managed to snatch defeat from the jaws of victory before ).

Pence’s ability to do damage would be limited with a hostile senate, and likely crippled with even a trivial democratic majority in the house. Even if something happens to RBG, the democrats technically have a “get out of confirming a supreme court justice free card” courtesy of Mitch McConnell if they take back the Senate.

So at a minimum, there is hope - even if we do end up with President Pence.

You’re ignoring the history of the last decade.

The GOP controls the electoral process in the red states, and they have made it very, very clear that they are willing and able to use this power to negate the influence of democracy.

There isn’t going to be a Democratic midterm swing in the red states, because the GOP are going to be doing everything they can to make it impossible for non-whites to vote.

It isn’t baffling at all.

Comey is a crooked GOP partisan hack, but he’s not a Trumpeter. His interference in the election was intended to restrict what he saw as the likely damage done to downticket Republicans by the association with Trump. He was as surprised as anyone else when Trump won; Comey achieved an accidental catastrophic success.

Since the election, Comey has been making some minor twitches towards establishing independence from the Trump administration. After Sally Yates’ testimony, the Trumpeters started to worry that the Russian link might be explicitly exposed, and decided that they needed to ensure that all of the key positions in the judicial system were occupied by solid Trump loyalists.

Hence, no more Comey.

Don’t misunderestimate the power of the tea party/alt-right/freedom-caucus to spin this as a “fixed/rigged” moment. "We won, but they took it away from us." (Electoral College irony noted.) I just don’t trust an electorate that was fooled by a Donald Trump to all of a sudden realize… that they were fooled by Donald Trump. It’s much easier to cling to the belief that they were/are right and under attack by outside sources.

For all we know, this will motivate the GOP electorate to “really” win this time. A point in your favor, however, is there is no Demagogue Apparent ready to swoop in and channel the masses’ misplaced righteous indignation.
