I didn’t post the original post that started this. And I wasn’t quite defending it. I just felt LDoBe had perfectly valid reasons to be angered, and it’s a little soon to start scolding.
News on our local case is that they are still detained and that they cannot speak to their lawyers.
What wonderful double/triplespeak.
Very quiet here at seatac. Heavy police presence. They’re riding bikes through the airport. A police SUV was ahead of me driving into the parking garage, and he just… stopped in the entrance and put his lights on for about 30 seconds. Blocking me and the car behind me from entering. No idea why.
The only headscarf I see is on a TSA agent.
Edit: komo news is reporting more protests are planed for this evening.
Because they’ve asked the executive branch how it will respond to a court order. And the answer is that they will comply per the directions of the Chief Executive.
To change this, congress would have to intervene. That is the road ahead.
I believe a fair number of Muslims have also been executed by unpleasant governments in the Middle East.
Hey, I know! Let’s help them!
As they didn’t exist during the last one… no. This seems like what he’s doing, though, doesn’t it. Preparing to lay the groundwork for Armageddon.
I just heard a caller on NPR’s 1A saying his only problem with Trump-Bannon’s executive order is that it doesn’t go far enough. We should ban all immigration, from everywhere. He sounded proud of himself, for seeing through the political correctness of our world.
Among the many things I don’t understand about this point of view is this: When did unbridled fear become something to crow about? Sure, it’s what has fueled conservatism for years, but this seems so over the top. We’re afraid that everyone’s coming to kill us personally. How about a little more shame with your craven fear?
Guys like that can’t be the wisecracking stars of their personal action movies unless they have a scary and terrible adversary. But really it’s fear of the unknown/Other masked by macho posturing.
So have atheists and apostates.
Those people are typically flogged to death.
A ban on travel does nothing to stop it. A ban that excludes the worst offenders is also useless.
The 2018 senate races consist of 8 Republicans and 23 Democrats + 2 independents that caucus with the Democrats. Even with a surge of opposition to Trump, it’s unlikely that the Senate will change hands. In fact, it’s probable the the Democrats will lose seats. The House, meanwhile, is heavily gerrymandered, which limits the number of competitive districts.
Unfortunately, we may have to hold out until 2020.
By which time the possibility of a free and fair USA election will be thoroughly dead and buried.
Y’all think Trump and Co are going to ease off on the voter suppression now that they have absolute power? By 2020, there’ll be barely any voters of colour left on the rolls in the red states.
Maybe, it’s too early to concede. It may not come from Congress, but this president is gonna face the kind of push back that this country hasn’t seen since Lincoln.
Hey, I think we need a trigger warning here! I still suffer PTSD from when that teacher hit me with a ruler!
The ACLU says they have received 350,000+ donations totaling more than $24,000,000 this weekend.
I came here to say this, too. Please, keep doing this. I know the way labour works there, getting up and out is more dangerous for your financial stability than in other places, but keep doing what your doing. Impeach the mother fucker already.
When I see this sort of thing happening, I’m always in a bit of a twist. It’s cool that an org doing good work gets big money; but they often do only when shit hits the fan at some level and makes news. That means their incentives are all wrong, regardless of whether they act on those incentives or not.
I’m totally part of the problem (I’m stingy with regular donations but I do get my money out in emergencies), so I’m not condemning anyone, just noting once more that our world is all fucked up.
I would just like to take this time to point out that the 9/11 hijackers came from Saudi Arabia, Egypt, Lebanon, and the UAE. None of these countries appear on Trump’s travel ban - but he wants us to believe this isn’t about religion but stopping terrorism. You be the judge.
