And then they settled. Smartmatic is a publicly traded company. They have a responsibility to settle if it’s in their shareholders best interest. Companies have no interest in restoring democracy.

This is very plausible. It confounds my opinion that Carlson was more calculating than ideological, though, I always thought his stances were primarily careerist. Just goes as evidence for my theory that if you tell lies long enough, even if you know they’re lies, your brain accepts them as reality in spite of yourself.
Carlson is a privileged white guy, and I can see him walking away from Fox in pique because the settlement can be read as the network not supporting his “reporting.”

It’s one thing to shoot the messenger, but it’s extreme to shoot the messenger for saying what you told them to say.
I expect Fox & Mirdoch will twist this as
“See, he lied, but now we’ll get people who tell the TRUTH as we see it”

Well, that does look like a defenestration to make room for Tucker. Recent changes at CNN have indicated they want to become Foxified, but nobody in the industry thought they could catch up with 3 decades of debasement quickly enough to satisfy Wall Street.

I wonder what this will do to Fox’s - and Tucker’s audiences. He’s their most popular host, so what happens to their ratings? Tucker will find many places eager for him to work there, but will they have remotely the same kind of reach that Fox does (or salary budget)? Seems like each could see their audience greatly lessened, which is win/win for our society/democracy.
That seems more likely, given how they’ve been losing audience to more extreme outlets - but this move makes it harder for them to do so, as Tucker was the guy leading the charge into fields further right. They’re going to have to replace him with a relative unknown.
But he’ll be a less-popular asshole.

I think from my view it’d be doubling down if Tucker was allowed a final sendoff show or if they announced a bunch of Tucker’s staff had been fired for misleading him and lying about sources/things.
But they shitcanned this guy and didn’t allow him his swan song, and he’s their most popular guy. I don’t think this ends with his firing, either. If they’re willing to fire him this way after his service AND the money he likely brought in, i bet there’s quite a few more commentators who should be afraid of what happens next.

I’m sure he’ll find something, but there’s reason to believe his career will never really recover. We have Bill O’Reilly as precedent there—he basically went from being the face of Fox News to “oh yeah… whatever happened to that guy?”

A couple of people have floated the thought of Carlson ending up at OAN or NewsMax. Dominion has lawsuits pending against both. They aren’t going to touch Carlson right now. RT…maybe. That’d be pretty stupid on their part, imo. I think more likely is that Carlson flies solo for awhile.
