Especially since they’re demonetizing really good content because it’s “controversial” like as in “irritates some people with facts that are accurate about things they don’t like” and things like missing persons cases which when handled responsibly are actually helpful and have gotten cold cases solved just through exposure.
But this… this they’re fine with. So it’s not ok to discuss a 15 year old case about a missing person or unsolved murder, but it’s kind of ok to poke at corpses you broke into areas of other countries to find while acting like a total jerk to every human you encounter there.
Youtube… you need to have a frank talk with yourself.

The side ads and immersed ads for boingboing related merch are probably going to stay since they’re trying to stay afloat in a world where that IS how you keep a large site up and running unless you’re wikipedia and can beg for money across the world. Though I guess they could open a “please donate to us” banner if they don’t already have one (I’ve never noticed one). I block obsessively so I see very few.
They’ve talked about this a bit though, and i actually know a bit about it because (don’t hate me) but some one I love works on the backend IT side of the online ad business (not as an advertiser but more in the business of allowing the advertisers to track and analyze the success of their ads). It can really REALLY be hard to totally scrub ads like that while retaining some from the position of the entity whose site the ads appear on,
but actually if you report it they really do follow up on it. And I’m pretty sure if a lot of folks start complaining about some of their own ads they might change them a bit.
Still as annoying as it is they have proven responsive to people over the years I’ve been here (before this username I think even). I think moving to this format, allowing more ads, was a survival decision really unless we want to pay to subscribe which we probably don’t. Part of the reason this is about the only “news” site I check outside of top word news and local news that actually impacts me is because they’ve continued to have such an active mod force, and maintained such direct responses with readers and commenters.
Shout out to things I miss though: Mainly Maggie. And a couple mods over the years that were great but obviously moved on.
Basically report any that really bother you or interfere even if they’re advertising the site, they definitely do review them. They probably will also take complaints about their own ads to heart.

I’m not so sure the apple just happened to fall there. It seems like the tree has a business plan for this, it probably just knows that the borderline creepy points already there with the apples would be OTT creepy coming from something with more roots than a sprout and years in which to have known better. I have a feeling good old supportive dad here isn’t that much better than the mom in that youtube debacle with that pretends-to-be-Japanese girl that caused a bunch of drama (forgot her name don’t care to remember).

I think you can agree that filming a dead body is a bad thing, and i’m sure you do. The rest about Logan Paul? Who cares, but i would like to point out that most of his audience is under age and they’re all cheering him on still. That’s the troublesome bit.
